Important features of the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu

The Inca roads were able to integrate the almost 900,000 km2 of extension that the Inca Empire had. Of all of them, the most famous, best preserved, and most frequented trail is the one that starts at Km. 88 of the Cusco-Quillabamba railroad and continues along 42 kilometers to Machu Picchu, the so-called Inca Trail.

The Inca Trail is a great adventure that involves traveling 42 kilometers for four days and three nights. The trek can be organized according to the economic possibilities and experiences of the participants. Cusco has agencies specialized in providing all the services for inexperienced tourists or for those who want more comfort.

Although the entire section is adequately signposted and contact with other adventurers in the area is frequent and enriching, there is no major assistance during the route, so it is necessary to do it with organized professionals who know the route and know how to react and what actions to take in case of any eventuality.

Fauna and flora

During the Inca Trail you can observe a great variety of orchids, numerous begonias, and puyas. Among the birds, the famous cock of the rock, hummingbirds, hawks, the wild guan, the caracara, as well as a great variety of hummingbirds, parrots and ducks stand out. It is possible to find mammals such as llamas, deer, spectacled bears, tarucas, sachacabras, wild cats, Andean foxes and otters. Among the reptiles, there is a great variety of frogs, lizards and vipers.

Landscapes

The scenery and landscapes change throughout the hike. On the first two days, the landscape is Andean with steep mountains, snow-capped mountains, forests, and streams. On the third day, on the other hand, the vegetation is denser, resembling a tropical forest.
